Why Focus Feels Hard in Midlife (and Why It’s Not Laziness)

Hey Reader,

The newsletter is a little behind this week. Well, I am going to blame it on the snow.

If focus feels harder for you lately, I want you to hear this clearly:

It doesn’t mean you’re lazy.
And it doesn’t mean what you’re working toward won’t ever work.

If you are like me and in midlife, you are carrying a lot.

When we sit down to focus now, our minds won't focus on only one task.
They spin through everything else:

Our kids.
Our spouse.
Our parents.
Our siblings.
The errands.
The bills.
The responsibilities that don’t show up on any to-do list.

And suddenly, the one thing we meant to work on gets buried under the weight of everyone else’s needs.

The mental load is real. It is a real thing.

That doesn’t mean something is wrong with you.
It means your life is fuller and your old systems that used to work excellently no longer fit the season you’re in.

Another truth we don’t talk about enough?
We’re tired.

We wear so many hats (mom, wife, daughter, friend, sister, aunt)and by the time we finally sit down to focus, our energy is already spent on everything else. Add too many priorities on top of that, and focus cant's even be formulated.

This is why trying to “just push through” doesn’t work anymore.

What does help is doing things differently:

• Choosing one or two true priorities instead of ten
• Creating a focus cue—a specific spot, music, or routine
• Learning when your best focus time actually is (morning, night, after movement, after rest)
• Letting go of the idea that productivity has to look the way it used to

Midlife focus isn’t about forcing yourself harder.
It’s about supporting yourself better. We have new habits and are in a new place in life, so new systems are needed.

You’re not behind.
You’re not failing.
You’re just in a season that requires a new approach.

If you can identify with this message, I talk more about this in my latest YouTube video.

For today, let’s do first things first.
Just one priority.

Be you, be well, be focused,
Shanna

P.S. Wherever you are right now, I hope you’re staying warm, calm, and taking care of yourself.

Hey Reader, I almost didn’t go on a walk with my family the other day. It didn’t feel important enough. I had other things I could have been doing at that time. And honestly? It felt easier to just skip it. Everyone else could go and I could get some things done at home. I was still going to be doing something; just not taking a walk. The truth is this: Most midlife moms don’t struggle with motivation. They struggle with decision fatigue. Should I do this activity instead of that one? How long...

Hey Reader, Welcome to Quarter 2! It is very hard to believe we are entering the second quarter of 2026. It is April. There’s something about turning the page into a new quarter that can either excite you or make you feel anxious. Which side are you on? This month is a chance to keep going with intention. Last month for me wasn’t about doing everything perfectly. It was about being present enough to notice the moments that actually matter. I had quite a few of those with everything that went...

Hey Reader, As January comes to a close, I wanted to pause and take a calm moment with you. This month always feels long. It is full of people telling us what we need to do to get ready to get through the year. It is full of fresh starts, big intentions, and then the reality of cold mornings, darker days, and winter weather. We have to take charge. ❄️ If you’re in the middle of snow, ice, or just the heaviness of winter, I hope you’re finding small ways to stay safe, warm, and steady. January...
